What Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
A Government Grant, Paid Straight Off Your Quote
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is run by Ofgem, the UK's energy regulator, and is open to homeowners and eligible business premises in England and Wales. It helps you move from a gas, oil or LPG heating system — or an old electric heating system — to a low-carbon heat pump. Your gas, oil or LPG system doesn't need to be old or broken to qualify; if you're on electric heating, it needs to be an older system.
You never receive or claim the money yourself. Your installer needs to be MCS-certified, which simply means they're approved to a recognised industry standard for installing heat pumps. They apply for the grant on your behalf and deduct it directly from your quote, so the discount is already built into the price you pay.
To qualify, you'll generally need:
A property in England or Wales
A gas, oil or LPG heating system currently in place (any age or condition), or an old electric heating system
Installation carried out by an MCS-certified installer
No outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations
Why Upgrade Now
Lower running costs
Heat pumps are far more efficient than fossil fuel boilers, cutting your day-to-day heating bills.
Cut your carbon footprint
Move away from fossil fuels and reduce your home or business's carbon emissions.
Time-limited enhanced grant
The extra £9,000 rate for oil and LPG homes is a temporary increase, currently expected to run until 31 March 2027 — so it's worth checking your eligibility sooner rather than later.
Pairs with solar & battery storage
Combine a heat pump with solar panels or a commercial PPA for even greater long-term savings.

Grant by Heating System
What You Could Be Eligible For
Currently on Oil or LPG
£9,000 towards a heat pump if your home isn't connected to the mains gas network and runs on oil or LPG — it doesn't matter how old or new your current system is.
Currently on Gas or Old Electric Heating
£7,500 towards a heat pump if your home currently runs on mains gas heating (any age or condition), or an older electric heating system.
Biomass Boiler
£5,000 towards a boiler that burns wood pellets or chips instead of fossil fuels — a good option where a heat pump isn't practical for your property.
Heat Battery / Air-to-Air
£2,500 towards a heat battery (which stores heat ready to use) or an air-to-air heat pump, which can also cool your home in summer.
